Behavior of Jatropha curcas L. seeds under osmotic stress: germination and cell cycle activity Agronomy
Brito, Cristiane Dantas de; Loureiro, Marta Bruno; Teles, Clarissa Abreu Santosw; Schuck, Mariane Ruzza; Fernandez, Luzimar Gonzaga; Castro, Renato Delmondez de.
Jatropha curcas is an oil-rich Euphorbiaceae seed species renowned for its apparent tolerance to environmental stresses. It is considered a promising source of renewable feedstock for biodiesel production in the Brazilian semiarid region where crop establishment requires a better understanding of the mechanisms leading to proper seed and plant behavior under water restrictive conditions. This study describes physiological and cytological profiles of J. curcas seeds imbibed in water restriction conditions by means of osmotic stress or osmoconditioning. Seeds were characterized by size, weight, moisture content and dry mass, germinability, and cell cycle activation by means of tubulin and microtubule cytoskeleton accumulation. Osmoconditioning at -0.8 MPa...

BEYOND THE “LEAST LIMITING WATER RANGE”: RETHINKING SOIL PHYSICS RESEARCH IN BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
van Lier,Quirijn de Jong; Gubiani,Paulo Ivonir.
As opposed to objective definitions in soil physics, the subjective term “soil physical quality” is increasingly found in publications in the soil physics area. A supposed indicator of soil physical quality that has been the focus of attention, especially in the Brazilian literature, is the Least Limiting Water Range (RLL), translated in Portuguese as "Intervalo Hídrico Ótimo" or IHO. In this paper the four limiting water contents that define RLLare discussed in the light of objectively determinable soil physical properties, pointing to inconsistencies in the RLLdefinition and calculation. It also discusses the interpretation of RLL as an indicator of crop productivity or soil physical quality, showing its inability to consider common phenological and...

Effect of ecological factors on germination of horse purslane (Trianthema portulacastrum) Planta Daninha
Tanveer,A.; Mumtaz,K.; Javaid,M.M.; Chaudhry,M.N.; Balal,R.M.; Khaliq,A..
Trianthema portulacastrum is a very problematic summer crop weed and a complete crop failure has been observed because of this weed at high density. The effect of different ecological factors on germination of T. portulacastrum seeds collected in two different years (2009 and 2005) was studied in laboratory experiments. An increase in temperature from 25 to 35 ºC increased germination percentage of T. portulacastrum from 65 to 85%, after which germination started to decrease, reducing to 71.25% at 45 ºC. Trianthema portulacastrum had maximum germination with distilled water compared with different salt solutions and drought stress levels. Germination was significantly minimum at salinity and drought stress level of 250 mM and -0.8 MPa, respectively....

Embolism resistance as a key mechanism to understand adaptive plant strategies Naturalis
Lens, F.; Tixier, A.; Cochard, H.; Sperry, J.S.; Jansen, S.; Herbette, S..
One adaptation of plants to cope with drought or frost stress is to develop wood that is able to withstand the formation and distribution of air bubbles (emboli) in its water conducting xylem cells under negative pressure. The ultrastructure of interconduit pits strongly affects drought-induced embolism resistance, but also mechanical properties of the xylem are involved. The first experimental evidence for a lower embolism resistance in stems of herbaceous plants compared to stems of their secondarily woody descendants further supports this mechanical-functional trade-off. An integrative approach combining (ultra)structural observations of the xylem, safetyefficiency aspects of the hydraulic pipeline, and xylem–phloem interactions will shed more light on...

Enhanced in vitro drought tolerance of Solanum tuberosum and Solanum commersonii plants overexpressing the ScCBF1 gene Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Pino,María Teresa; Ávila,Andrea; Molina,Andrea; Jeknic,Zoran; Chen,Tony H.H.
Cultivated potato crops are sensitive to drought stress, reducing yield and tuber quality when the soil water potential drops to -0.3 MPa. However, drought not only affects plant growth and physiological activity, but this stress also induces biochemical and molecular changes in the cellular gene expression profile. triggering genes that play a direct role in plant protection and gene regulation. The genes involved in regulation include C-repeat Binding Factors/Dehydration responsive element binding (CBF/DREB) transcription factors, which increase cold, drought and salt tolerance in different plant species. The aim of this research was to evaluate whether the overexpression of the ScCBF1 gene from Solanum commersonii enhances drought stress tolerance in...

Environmental drivers on leaf phenology of ironstone outcrops species under seasonal climate Anais da ABC (AABC)
GARCIA,LETÍCIA C.; BARROS,FERNANDA V.; LEMOS-FILHO,JOSÉ P..
ABSTRACT Banded iron formations (BIF) have a particular vegetation type and provide a good model system for testing theories related to leaf phenology, due to unique stressful environmental conditions. As a consequence of the stressful conditions of BIF environment, we hypothesize that most species would retain at least some significant canopy cover, even at the end of the dry season, independently of growth form - trees, shrubs, and sub-shrubs. Considering the strong seasonality, we also hypothesize that photoperiod and rainfall act as triggers for leaf fall and leaf flushing in these environments. The majority of the fifteen studied species had a semi-deciduous behavior and shed their leaves mainly during the dry season, with a recovery at the end of...

Expression of SOD transgene in pepper confer stress tolerance and improve shoot regeneration Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Chatzidimitriadou,Kiriaki; Nianiou-Obeidat,Irini; Madesis,Panagiotis; Perl-Treves,Rafael; Tsaftaris,Athanasios.
The objective of this work was to study the stress tolerance and regeneration capability of transgenic pepper plants carrying a sod gene, encoding a tomato chloroplast-localized Cu/Zn SOD protein. The expression of the sod gene was confirmed by enzymatic staining following polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), revealing a ‘novel’ band, which could represent a heterodimeric enzyme. Transgenic T1 and T2 progeny plants were exposed to different oxidative stresses including Methyl viologen (MV) and drought and found to have an increased resistance to oxidative damage. Furthermore, the SOD carrying transgenic pepper plants showed increased levels of regeneration efficiency compared to the wild type pepper plants. Pepper is a...

Foliar phosphorus supply and CO2 assimilation in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) under water deficit Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Santos,Mauro G. dos; Ribeiro,Rafael V.; Teixeira,Marcelo G.; Oliveira,Ricardo F. de; Pimentel,Carlos.
Two common bean cultivars were grown in pots under greenhouse conditions. Plants were submitted to a foliar Pi spray two days before suspending irrigation, what enhanced net CO2 assimilation rate of Ouro Negro cultivar but did not change significantly the photosynthesis of Carioca cultivar under both water deficit and rehydration periods. The results revealed that a foliar Pi spray induced an up-regulation of photosynthesis in common bean under mild water deficit, with this effect being genotype-dependent.

Increased synthesis of galactinol and raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs) has been reported in vegetative tissues in response to a range of abiotic stresses. In this work, we evaluated the transcriptional profile of a Coffea canephora galactinol synthase gene (CcGolS1) in two clones that differed in tolerance to water deficit in order to assess the contribution of this gene to drought tolerance. The expression of CcGolS1 in leaves was differentially regulated by water deficit, depending on the intensity of stress and the genotype. In clone 109A (drought-susceptible), the abundance of CcGolS1 transcripts decreased upon exposure to drought, reaching minimum values during recovery from severe water deficit and stress. In contrast, CcGolS1 gene expression...

Genetic parameters for drought-tolerance in cassava PAB
Oliveira,Eder Jorge de; Aidar,Saulo de Tarso; Morgante,Carolina Viana; Chaves,Agnaldo Rodrigues de Melo; Cruz,Jailson Lopez; Coelho Filho,Maurício Antônio.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of drought on genetic parameters and breeding values of cassava. The experiments were carried out in a completely randomized block design with three replicates, under field conditions with (WD) or without (FI) water deficit. Yield of storage roots (RoY), shoot (ShY), and starch (StY), as well as the number of roots (NR), and root dry matter content (DMC) were evaluated in 47 cassava accessions. Significant differences were observed among accessions; according to heritability, these differences had mostly a genetic nature. Heritability estimates for genotypic effects () ranged from 0.25±0.12 (NR) to 0.60±0.18 (DMC), and from 0.51±0.17 (NR) to 0.80±0.21 (RoY and StY) for WD and FI, respectively, as a...

Genetic variation and interrelationships of agronomic characteristics in durum wheat under two constructing water regimes BABT
Talebi,Reza; Fayyaz,Farzad; Naji,Amir Mohammad.
This work aimed to study the grain yield components and plant characteristics related to grain yield. Twenty-four durum wheat genotypes from the ICARDA durum wheat breeding program were grown during 2006-2007 under rainfed and irrigated conditions using a complete randomized block design with three replicate in west of Iran. Correlation and path analysis were carried out. Results showed that there was strong positive association of grain yield with the number of seed/spike, biomass and harvest index. Grain yield was negatively associated with spike length and plant height in different moisture conditions. Comparatively, high genetic variation was found in grain yield and other characteristics. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used as a tool to classify...

Growth, phenology and chlorophyll fluorescence of habanero pepper ( Capsicum chinense Jacq.) under water stress conditions Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Pérez-Gutiérrez,Alfonzo; Garruña,René; Vázquez,Pedro; Latournerie-Moreno,Luis; Andrade,José Luis; Us-Santamaría,Roberth.
Abstract: The irrigation methods offer a good alternative for increasing water use efficiency. The main purpose of this study was to identify the best irrigation level for Habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) plants based on available water capacity (AWC) of substrate. An experiment carried out with three irrigation levels (20, 40 and 60% of AWC) and five genotypes (H225, H241, H244, H226 and Jaguar). The irrigation level of 20% decreased the soil water potential to cause water stress in plants. At an irrigation level of 40%, average jaguar plant height (92 cm) and H241 (79 cm), genotypes were greater than under the other treatments. Average leaf area of H225, H241 and H244 plants was at least 48% greater than Jaguar plants. Average total dry matter...

Identifying drought events in sugarcane using drought indices derived from Modis sensor PAB
Picoli,Michelle Cristina Araujo; Duft,Daniel Garbellini; Machado,Pedro Gerber.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of several spectral indices, used on moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (Modis) images, in identifying drought events in sugarcane. Images of Terra and Aqua satellites were used to calculate the spectral indices, using visible (red), near infrared, and shortwave infrared bands, and eight indices were selected: NDVI, EVI2, GVMI, NDI6, NDI7, NDWI, SRWI, and MSI. The indices were calculated using images between October and April of the crop years 2007/08, 2008/09, 2009/10, and 2013/14. These indices were then correlated with the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI), calculated for 1, 3, and 6 months. Four of them had significant correlations with SPEI: GVMI,...
